GAZA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — Hamas on Sunday confirmed its readiness to fulfill a request from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to deliver food and medicine to Israeli captives in the Gaza Strip.
Abu Obeida, a spokesman for the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the militant wing of the Hamas movement, said the move, however, was dependent on “the normal and permanent opening of humanitarian corridors for the passage of food and medicine to all areas of the Gaza Strip and the cessation of all forms of enemy air raids during the delivery of packages for the hostages.”
A. Obeida said the group “does not starve the hostages,” adding that “they eat the same food as our fighters and our people, and will not receive special privileges due to the crimes of siege and starvation.”
The statement came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked ICRC regional head Julien Lerisson to provide hostages in the Gaza Strip with essential medicine and food.
Between Thursday and Saturday, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad released videos showing three Israeli hostages in apparently grave condition. The videos sparked protests in Israel, where demonstrators called on the government to broker a ceasefire to secure the release of the Gaza hostages. –0–
