BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) — China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) on Monday extended an orange alert for heavy rains, warning that heavy rainfall would hit large swaths of the country.
According to the NMC, from 2:00 p.m. Monday to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, heavy rains are expected in some areas of Qinghai, Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Liaoning, Henan, Shandong, Guangdong, Fujian and Yunnan provinces, Beijing and Tianjin cities, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions, and Taiwan.
In some areas of Hebei, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, as well as in areas along the country's east coast, heavy rainfall of up to 350 mm is forecast. In some places in the above-mentioned areas, short-term heavy rainfall is possible, with a maximum rainfall of over 80 mm per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The NMC called on local authorities to carry out necessary preparatory work, check drainage systems in cities and agricultural lands, and remain vigilant against potential mountain torrents, landslides and mudflows.
Let us recall that China has a four-tier weather warning system, with red representing the highest level of danger, followed by orange, yellow and blue. -0-
