China issues alert over heavy rains and heatwaves

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — China's National Meteorological Center on Saturday issued a yellow alert for heavy rain and a yellow warning for heat in some parts of the country.

According to the NMC, heavy rains are expected to hit parts of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Heilongjiang Province, Jilin Province, Liaoning Province, Hebei Province, Beijing City and other cities from 8:00 a.m. Saturday to 8:00 a.m. Sunday.

In particular, in some places in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Heilongjiang Province, Jiangsu Province and elsewhere, up to 150 mm of precipitation will fall, and in some places in the above-mentioned areas, heavy rains with a maximum precipitation amount of more than 70 mm per hour may occur.

The NMC advised local authorities and relevant agencies to prepare for heavy rains. Schools and kindergartens were advised to take measures to ensure the safety of students, and drivers were advised to exercise caution due to flooding and traffic jams.

According to the NMC forecast, on Saturday, in vast areas of the country, covering many provinces and regions, the air temperature will reach 35-39 degrees Celsius.

In particular, in some places in the provinces of Shaanxi, Sichuan, the city of Chongqing, as well as the Turpan Basin of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the thermometer will exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

The NMC recommended avoiding strenuous outdoor activities after midday and taking precautions to protect vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
