HANOI, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — Eight people have been killed and three others are missing in flash floods and landslides that have hit northern Vietnam's Dien Bien Province in recent days, the Vietnam News Agency reported Saturday.

About 60 houses had been washed away or damaged by floodwaters as of 6 a.m. Saturday, according to the country's Disaster Management Authority.

30 villages remain isolated due to traffic disruption.

Almost 700 people, including police officers, military personnel, local militia and representatives of public organizations, have been involved in the search for the missing persons.

During an inspection tour of one commune on Saturday morning, Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha called on local authorities to act quickly to ensure no one is left without food, communication or access to information.

He also stressed the need to ensure the safety of both rescuers and citizens affected by the disaster. –0–
