GENEVA, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) — China's National People's Congress (NPC) is willing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with parliaments around the world and promote the building of a community with a shared future for humanity, Zhao Leji, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said in a speech titled "Upholding Multilateralism and Jointly Building a Better Home" at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament held in Geneva from July 29 to 31.

Our planet is facing serious challenges to the cause of peace and human development, and legislative bodies must play a more active role in shaping a new model of international relations, he noted.

The NPC Standing Committee chairman called on parliaments to jointly act as guardians of global peace and tranquility, uphold the concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries as well as the development paths chosen by their people.

He also called on lawmakers to jointly promote global development and prosperity, maintain win-win cooperation, safeguard the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, and provide legal guarantees to advance the common development of all countries.

Zhao Leji particularly emphasized the role of legislative organs in promoting exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations, respecting the diversity of world civilizations, and encouraging inclusive and diversified development.

In jointly defending international justice, parliamentarians must support and practice genuine multilateralism, working to create a fairer and more reasonable system of global governance, he added.

Zhao Leji stressed that the NPC is willing to cooperate with the Inter-Parliamentary Union and legislative bodies of all countries to jointly implement the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and build a community with a shared future for humanity.

On Wednesday morning, he also chaired the general debate of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.

During the conference, the chairman of the NPC Standing Committee met with IPU President Tulia Exon and the organization's secretary-general Martin Chungong.

Zhao Leji said the NPC is willing to deepen exchanges and cooperation with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, continue to organize seminars for parliamentarians from developing countries, and promote more effective exchanges between legislative bodies.

T. Exon said that the Inter-Parliamentary Union highly appreciates Beijing's firm support for the promotion of multilateralism and is ready to work with China to promote the building of a community with a shared future for all mankind. M. Chungong expressed gratitude to China for its active participation in the work of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and its important contribution to it.

Zhao Leji also held talks with the leaders of parliaments of Brazil, Pakistan, Russia and Kazakhstan.

The theme of this year's World Conference of Speakers of Parliament was "A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All." –0–
