BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) — China's YH-1000 unmanned cargo aircraft recently completed a cargo test flight in complex terrain, marking a milestone for its future commercial operation.
The YH-1000 aircraft, developed by the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), made the flight on July 28 along a 134-kilometer route connecting the Liangping and Wulong districts of southwest China's Chongqing city, Science and Technology Daily reported.
At 7:47 on July 28, a YH-1000 aircraft carrying a cargo container took off from Liangping Airport, and more than an hour later, it made a smooth landing at Xiannushan Airport in Wulong District. After unloading and loading the cargo, the aircraft departed at 9:47, landing at Liangping Airport at 11:02.
The aircraft flew over five mountain peaks, each of which is over 1,000 meters high, and also crossed the territory above the Wujiang Canyon and the Yangtze River waterway, thus passing a full-scale test of its ability to fly with cargo, fly across regions and return autonomously in the complex mountainous terrain of the Yangtze River basin.
According to a person in charge of the YH-1000 development team, the recent test flight of the drone shows that the YH-1000 has the technical capabilities required for commercial use. In the future, its trial operation will be promoted, thus giving new impetus to the rapid development of the “low-altitude economy” in the western region of China.
The YH-1000 aircraft project started in June 2024 and its maiden flight took place on May 22, 2025. With outstanding capabilities such as ultra-short takeoff and landing and strong adaptability to harsh operating environments, it can take off and land on roads, hard ground and grass surfaces, which will greatly expand the application possibilities of unmanned cargo aircraft.
The YH-1000 aircraft has a payload capacity of over 1,000 kg, a maximum operating altitude of 8,000 meters, and a flight duration of 10 hours. The new drone will enable low-cost and fast cargo transportation between cities and remote areas, as well as improve logistics communications in the central and western regions of the country.
