Vladivostok, July 30 /Xinhua/ — A state of emergency has been declared in the Severo-Kurilsky District of the Sakhalin Region of the Russian Federation due to an earthquake and tsunami, TASS reported, citing the press service of the regional government.
As noted, the tsunami threat remains on the islands of Paramushir and Shumshu. The first waves flooded the territory of the port and the Alaid fishing enterprise. The power supply was cut off in the area to eliminate the threat of short circuits and fires. A small tent camp of the Russian Geographical Society, which was located on the east coast, was washed away. 30 people moved to a safe place. Residents were evacuated, there was no serious damage or casualties.
A powerful earthquake occurred off the coast of Kamchatka this morning, with a magnitude of 8.7, according to various estimates. It was the strongest earthquake since 1952.
