PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia, July 28 (Xinhua) — The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to impose a ceasefire from 24:00 on Monday, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said following talks he hosted in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
At a joint press conference with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Vechayachai following ceasefire talks, Anwar Ibrahim outlined the step-by-step de-escalation process and the mechanisms for its implementation and monitoring.
“Cambodia and Thailand have reached consensus on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, effective from 24:00 local time on 28 July 2025. This is an important first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security,” the Malaysian prime minister said.
According to him, the initial ceasefire will be followed by the resumption of contacts between the regional commanders of the two sides through a face-to-face meeting on July 29 at 07:00 local time. Then, if both sides agree, a meeting of military attaches will be held under the leadership of the ASEAN Chairman, and finally, a meeting of the joint border commission will be held in Cambodia on August 4.
“As the current ASEAN chair, Malaysia stands ready to coordinate the observer team to verify and ensure the ceasefire is observed. Malaysia will also consult with other ASEAN member states on participating in the observer mission, which will reflect the regional commitment to ensuring peace on earth,” Anwar Ibrahim said.
“The parties also agreed to resume direct contacts between prime ministers, foreign ministers and defence ministers,” the head of the Malaysian government added. –0–
