ABUJA, July 28 (Xinhua) — At least 13 bodies have been found and dozens of people are missing after a wooden boat capsized in central Nigeria's Niger state, local emergency officials said Sunday.

Abdullahi Baba-Arah, head of the Niger State Disaster Management Agency, told Xinhua that the overloaded boat was carrying passengers, mostly traders, and agricultural produce from Gunu community to the weekly market in Kwata-Zumba, Shiroro district.

At least three people, including the boat operator, were rescued, he said, adding that the exact number of passengers on board was unknown because no passenger list had been compiled.

Rescuers, including local divers and volunteers, have joined the ongoing search and rescue efforts.

Nigeria is prone to frequent maritime accidents, often due to overloaded vessels, poor safety practices and adverse weather conditions. –0–
