NEW DELHI, July 28 (Xinhua) — At least two people were killed and 29 others injured in a stampede at a temple in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh early Monday, local police said.
The stampede occurred at around 2:00 am local time after an electric cable snapped and fell on a tin canopy at the Avsaneshwar Mahadev temple in Barabanki district, about 50 km east of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.
According to District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi, the electric wire was snapped because some monkeys jumped on it during a large gathering of devotees.
"Two people were killed and 29 others injured in a stampede at the Avsaneshwar Mahadev Temple today due to a broken electric wire," a police official said. "The injured were immediately taken to district medical facilities. The seriously injured were referred to the district hospital," he added. –0–
