BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua) — China's Ministry of Water Resources on Monday activated a Level 4 flood prevention alert in four provincial-level regions — Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi and Shanghai — against Typhoon Komei, the eighth typhoon this year.
According to the department, heavy rains are forecast for Shanghai, as well as the provinces of Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu and Jiangxi from July 28 to August 2. The river network around Lake Taihu may experience sharp rises in water levels, with dangerous flood levels possibly exceeded on some small and medium-sized rivers.
The ministry also issued a Level 4 flood alert in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps on Monday due to melting snow caused by high temperatures. Flooding on the Tarim River and its tributaries is expected to continue until mid-August.
The authorities called for close monitoring of changes in weather conditions, timely issuance of warnings and strengthening of flood prevention measures to protect the lives and property of the population.
China has a four-tier flood emergency response system, with Level 1 being the highest. –0–
