BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua) — Chinese authorities on Monday activated Level 4 flood and typhoon alerts in three provincial-level regions as Typhoon Ko Mei approaches, the Ministry of Emergency Management said.

Emergency measures have been introduced by the General Headquarters for Flood and Drought Control in the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, as well as in the central city of Shanghai in the east of the country. A task force has been dispatched to Zhejiang to assist in flood and typhoon relief efforts.

Typhoon Koh Mei, the eighth typhoon of the year, had maximum wind speeds of force 8 near the center on Monday afternoon, meteorological services said.

China's National Meteorological Center issued a blue alert for the typhoon on Monday evening, forecasting strong winds and heavy rain in affected areas on July 28 and 29.

China has a four-tier flood emergency response system, with Level 1 being the highest, and a four-tier weather warning system, with red being the highest level of danger, followed by orange, yellow and blue. –0–
