DALIAN, July 26 (Xinhua) — In the height of summer, workers at the Guozhanhao blueberry plantation in Lushunkou District of Dalian City, northeast China's Liaoning Province, began harvesting the crop as early as 5:00 a.m. to send boxes of high-quality blueberries from here to Russia.

Now is the blueberry harvest season. According to Yu Qingwen, the responsible representative of this plantation, this year the base has introduced cold greenhouse production, which has increased the blueberry yield by more than 50 percent compared to last year and brought the total production to more than 35 thousand kg.

It is reported that growing in cold greenhouses has such advantages as earlier ripening, high quality of berries and stable yield, in contrast to growing berries in open ground. Stable regulation of environmental factors, in particular temperature, humidity and light inside the greenhouse, can significantly reduce the negative impact of extreme weather conditions, diseases and pests on the quality and yield of blueberries.

“We are currently harvesting 1,500-2,000 kg of blueberries a day, and our main sales destination is Russia,” Yu Qingwen said, adding that after harvesting, the berries are transported by refrigerated trucks to the Suifenhe checkpoint in Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China, from where they can be delivered to Russia in a short time of 2 to 3 days.

This plantation started growing blueberries five years ago, at that time 13 thousand seedlings of two varieties "Bluecrop" and "Liberty" were brought from Dandong for trial planting in open ground. These varieties are very popular not only in the domestic market, but also abroad.

According to statistics, in 2024, the total area of blueberry cultivation in China exceeded 73 thousand hectares. Thus, China has become one of the countries with the fastest growth rate of production of these nutritious berries. -0-
