GAZA, July 25 (Xinhua) — Hamas reiterated its commitment to ongoing ceasefire talks early Friday after U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff criticized the movement's intentions in the talks.

In a press statement, Hamas expressed its “surprise” at the envoy’s comments, reiterating that the movement’s involvement in the diplomatic process was aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas said it welcomed the comments and proposals received from mediators, including Egypt, Qatar and the United States, adding that it remained open to further talks and committed to working within the established mediation mechanism.

S. Witkoff said Thursday the United States would seek "alternative options" for a cease-fire in Gaza, with the U.S. negotiating team returning home from Qatar for consultations on Hamas' latest response, which he called "selfish."

“We have decided to bring our team home from Doha for consultations following the latest response from Hamas, which clearly shows the lack of desire to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza,” he wrote on social media X. –0–
