The apartment building with shops on Myasnitskaya is one of the most recognizable and striking buildings on the street thanks to its ceremonial façade in classical forms, created by the architect Semyon Eybushits. The building was erected in the 1860s on the site of the former ceremonial courtyard of the Saltykov estate after its transformation into an apartment building.
The oldest building is hidden in the courtyard, this is building 4. At its base are the Saltykov chambers, built before the mid-18th century. In 1825, it was here that the history of the Stroganov School began. Sergei Stroganov, a generous patron of the arts, founded a large, accessible even to serfs, "School of Drawing in Relation to Arts and Crafts." He placed an advertisement in "Moskovskie Vedomosti" and called on landowners to send talented serfs for training, and craftsmen and manufacturers to send apprentices and sons.
In the first third of the 19th century, a third floor was added to the building. The Venice Hotel opened in the renovated building. Later, in the 1880s, it was replaced by the Royal Hotel, where Dmitry Mendeleev, the creator of the periodic table of chemical elements, stayed.
The building was last reconstructed in 1891, when a fourth floor was added. The author of the reconstruction was the architect Karl Treiman, who also built the Gothic castle of Andrey Knop in Kolpachny Lane.
