GUANGZHOU, July 21 (Xinhua) — As the impact of Typhoon Wipha, the sixth this year, on south China's Guangdong Province gradually eases, the provincial flood, drought and wind control headquarters announced at 11 a.m. Monday that it has adjusted the typhoon's emergency response level from Level 2 to Level 4.
Heavy rainfall is expected in cities and counties in southern Guangdong Province on Monday, according to the provincial meteorological observatory. Winds and rainfall caused by the typhoon will weaken significantly across Guangdong from Tuesday.
All localities and relevant departments in Guangdong Province are still required to maintain heightened vigilance, holding 24-hour vigils and inter-departmental coordination meetings, while taking comprehensive preventive measures against typhoons, heavy rains and potential secondary disasters.
Disaster recovery efforts are currently underway with priority given to repairing and restoring critical infrastructure, including transport networks, power supply systems and communications.
Wipha made landfall for the second time as a severe tropical storm near Hailing Island in Yangjiang, Guangdong Province, at around 8:15 p.m. Sunday, according to the provincial meteorological observatory. The maximum wind speed near its epicenter reached 25 meters per second.
China has a four-tier emergency response system, with tier one being the most serious. -0-
