BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) — China's total electricity consumption, a key barometer of economic activity, increased 5.4 percent year-on-year in June to 867 billion kWh, according to data released Monday by the National Energy Administration.
Electricity consumption in the primary and secondary sectors of the economy in June increased by 4.9 percent and 3.2 percent to 13.3 billion kWh and 548.8 billion kWh, respectively, while the tertiary sector demonstrated growth of 9 percent to 175.8 billion kWh. Electricity consumption by the population amounted to 129.1 billion kWh, an increase of 10.8 percent.
China consumed a total of 4.84 trillion kWh of electricity from January to June, up 3.7 percent from a year ago.
In recent days, due to the established heat in many regions of the country, electricity consumption has increased sharply. The historical maximum was reached on July 16, and when the peak load in the country's power grid was 1.506 billion kilowatts, which became the first historical maximum in the country with a mark of more than 1.5 billion kilowatts, follows from the data of the aforementioned department. -0-
