BRUSSELS, July 12 (Xinhua) — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Saturday warned that Washington's decision to impose 30 percent tariffs on EU exports risks seriously disrupting key transatlantic supply chains, and vowed that the EU would retaliate if necessary.
“The introduction of 30 percent tariffs on EU exports would disrupt key transatlantic supply chains to the detriment of businesses, consumers and patients on both sides of the Atlantic,” von der Leyen said in a statement.
The head of the European Commission made the corresponding statement following the statement by US President Donald Trump, who announced that his administration would impose tariffs of 30 percent on EU exports, citing a long-term imbalance in bilateral trade and a lack of reciprocity.
U. von der Leyen responded that the EU remains committed to a negotiated settlement, but stressed that the European Union will take measures to protect its economic interests if negotiations fail.
“We remain committed to continuing to work towards reaching an agreement by 1 August,” she added. “At the same time, we will take all necessary steps to safeguard the EU’s interests, including taking proportionate countermeasures if necessary.” –0–
