KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, spoke to the media on Saturday about China-ASEAN cooperation. He is attending the ASEAN Plus Foreign Ministers' Meetings in Kuala Lumpur.

Wang Yi noted that against the backdrop of the current rampant unilateralism and protectionism, China and ASEAN countries have demonstrated a strong will to support each other, unite and cooperate to jointly solve problems.

He said the meetings had achieved a number of results. First, both sides confirmed the completion of negotiations on the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area 3.0 and agreed to submit the relevant document for approval and signing at the leaders' meeting in October. This signaled that China and ASEAN would continue to advance regional economic integration and build a high-level regional free trade network.

Second, China and ASEAN agreed on a comprehensive strategic partnership action plan for the next five years, which outlined more than 40 goals for comprehensive cooperation in various fields, giving strong impetus to bilateral pragmatic cooperation in the next stage.

Third, both sides welcomed the completion of the third reading of the draft text of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, and agreed to strive to complete the consultations in 2026 and adopt a document that is effective, meaningful and consistent with international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. This will provide a more solid guarantee for peace and stability in the South China Sea.

The minister noted that China proposes to create a community of shared destiny with neighboring countries and promote their modernization.

All ASEAN countries highly value the China-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership and believe that China is the most important dialogue partner of the association, Wang said. China-ASEAN cooperation is the most vigorous and fruitful in the Asia-Pacific region, and Beijing has full confidence in the future of relations with ASEAN, he added. –0–
