Specialists from the Samara group of Rosneft enterprises and ornithologists from the Samarskaya Luka National Park summed up the results of the field stage of a joint project to study and preserve the endangered white-tailed eagle on the territory of the reserve.
The key result was the data indicating an increase in the population of the red-listed bird in the Samarskaya Luka National Park by more than a third. Field studies of the autumn-winter period of 2024-2025 confirmed the positive dynamics. Scientists discovered new nests of eagles in the park, which indicates an expansion of the nesting range. Thanks to monitoring in previously identified areas, the constant presence of birds, active renewal of nests and mating behavior were recorded. To protect key habitats of birds in these areas, a special regime was introduced and patrols were increased.
The main criterion for assessing the dynamics was the data on breeding observations: in 2024, all pairs successfully hatched chicks. The current activity of birds and 100% nesting success last year allow scientists to predict population growth in the reserve.
Educational work is an integral part of the strategy for the conservation of rare animals. As part of the project, information stands have been installed on the reserve's walking routes, introducing visitors to the key characteristics of the white-tailed eagle population: it is the largest bird of prey in the Samara Region, included in the Red Books of the region, Russia, and the International Red Book.
Photo and video recording of birds in their natural habitat is another important area of the conservation project. The collected materials will be used to create a scientific archive, educational programs and further conservation initiatives. In addition, it is planned to organize a photo exhibition "Orlan".
Caring for the environment is an integral part of the corporate culture and principles of Rosneft. The Company pays great attention to ornithological projects. Thanks to the support of the Company's subsidiaries in different regions of the country, research is conducted and programs for the care of rare bird species are implemented: Steller's sea eagles, wild geese, ivory gulls, etc.

The enterprises of the Samara Rosneft Group have had long-standing cooperation with the Samarskaya Luka National Park. A grant project to study and protect the white-tailed eagle has been implemented for the second year. Another grant project has developed and launched the Ecotrail 63 mobile application for virtual travel around the national park. Earlier, thanks to the support of oil workers, the LukAmorye environmental education complex was opened in the city of Zhigulevsk, a visitor center in the village of Sosnovy Solonets, and an aviary was built for birds that have lost the ability to live in the wild.
