Known as "China's Hornbill Valley", the Tongbiguan Provincial Nature Reserve in Yingjiang County, Yunnan Province is one of the most densely populated hornbill habitats in China.
In recent years, due to the increase in the hornbill population in the "Hornbill Valley of China", there has been a shortage of natural nests that these birds use to feed their chicks. Since 2021, the Protection Bureau of the Provincial-Level Tongbiguan Nature Reserve of Yunnan Province has been conducting an experiment in installing artificial nests in the "Hornbill Valley of China", and after three years of technology optimization, the buff-necked hornbills have successfully bred in artificial nests in 2024 and 2025.
According to Yang Zuwei, an engineer with the Yingjiang Branch of the Yunnan Province Tongbiguan Nature Reserve Protection Bureau, the artificial nests effectively solve the problem of the shortage of natural nests, providing technical support for increasing the hornbill population. The nests also provide shelter for owls and other bird species, playing an important role in protecting and enhancing local biodiversity.
Hornbills are a typical representative and symbol of tropical rainforests, and their presence in a certain area indicates the stabilization and improvement of the ecological situation in tropical forests.
