BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Wednesday called on the European Union (EU) to take a more objective and rational approach to China and pursue a more positive and pragmatic policy toward it.

Mao Ning made the statement at a regular press conference, commenting at the request of the media on recent statements by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding relations between China and the EU.

Noting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, Mao Ning stressed that this is an important year for continuing the good traditions of bilateral relations and opening the way for their future development.

The diplomat called on the EU to truly develop a more objective and rational understanding of China and pursue a more positive and pragmatic policy towards it.

"China hopes that the EU will realize the need to rebalance its own thinking, not the trade and economic relations between China and the EU," Mao Ning said.

“In the current unstable global environment, we hope that the EU will meet China halfway, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation, properly manage differences and frictions, and promote the sustainable, healthy and stable development of China-EU relations,” she added. -0-
