KABUL, July 6 (Xinhua) — Afghan interim government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has welcomed the Russian Federation's decision to recognize the "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" as the de jure administration of the post-war Central Asian state and hopes that other countries will follow suit.

"We are grateful to Russia for this bold decision. We welcome it, and it can open a new page in relations between Afghanistan and Russia," Z. Mujahid said in an interview with local publication Tolonews on Friday evening.

Russia was the first country to officially recognize the interim government of Afghanistan and receive the ambassador of the interim government.

Z. Mujahid also noted that Russia’s decision “deserves high praise,” adding: “We also call on other countries to fulfill their obligations to establish contacts and build relations with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.”

The interim government of Afghanistan came to power in August 2021 after the withdrawal of foreign troops led by the United States. –0–
