Vladivostok, January 2 (Xinhua) — A fire broke out in a two-story private home in the Yakut village of Suntar. Firefighters found five dead while extinguishing the fire, TASS reported on Friday.

The victims included three children and two adults. The fire spread over an area of 24 square meters. Six firefighters and two units of local fire equipment were called in to extinguish the blaze.

Quito, January 1 (Xinhua) — Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a new 60-day state of emergency in nine provinces and three municipalities due to rising criminal violence, local media reported on Thursday.

The decree signed by the president on Wednesday will be in effect from Thursday in the provinces of Guayas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Los Ríos, El Oro, Esmeraldas, Pichincha and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, as well as in the province of Sucumbíos.

Beirut, January 2 (Xinhua) — More than 1,800 UN peacekeepers have left southern Lebanon since early November 2025, with more than 300 expected to leave by May 2026, Candice Ardell, spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on Thursday.

The peacekeepers' withdrawal is due to overall budget cuts, not the early closure of the mission, she noted. According to the agency's source, UN Security Council Resolution 2790, adopted in late August 2025, extended UNIFIL's mandate until December 31, 2026, and authorized its gradual withdrawal thereafter.

UNIFIL comprises approximately 10,500 peacekeepers from around 50 countries.

Los Angeles, January 1 (Xinhua) — More than 2,000 measles cases were reported in the United States in 2025, the highest annual number since 1992, according to data released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As of December 30, 2,065 cases of measles had been confirmed in the country, with approximately 11 percent of patients requiring hospitalization. According to the CDC, the disease has appeared in 44 jurisdictions in the United States. A small number of cases have been identified among international travelers.

The number of cases is the highest since 1992, when 2,126 cases of measles were confirmed in the United States.

According to CDC estimates, 49 outbreaks of infection were reported in 2025. Outbreak-related cases accounted for 88 percent of confirmed measles cases.

BANJUL, January 2 (Xinhua) — At least seven people were killed and 96 others were rescued after a boat suspected of carrying more than 200 illegal migrants capsized around midnight Wednesday off the coast of Gambia, the country's Defense Ministry said Thursday.

According to a press release, the vessel capsized near the village of Jinak. After receiving a distress call, the Gambian Navy launched a search and rescue operation in coordination with national security authorities and emergency response specialists.

Geneva, January 1 (Xinhua) — Around 40 people were killed and more than 110 injured in a fire at a bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana in the canton of Valais in southwestern Switzerland, local police said on Thursday.
